Master Touch Typing: Home Row Words Practice (Lesson 3)
Welcome to Lesson 3 of your touch typing journey! By now, you should be familiar with the individual keys on the center of your keyboard. Today, we are taking a massive leap forward.
We are done typing random letters like fjfj. It’s time to start typing actual words.
In this lesson, we will focus exclusively on Home Row Words—words that can be spelled without your fingers ever leaving their starting position. This is the secret to building rock-solid muscle memory.
Why the "Home Row" is Your Base Camp
The "Home Row" is the center row of keys on your keyboard. In touch typing, this is your "Base Camp." No matter where your fingers travel later (to reach Q or Z), they must always snap back to the Home Row.
How to Place Your Fingers Correctly
Before you start the game below, look at your keyboard one last time. Place your fingers exactly as described here. Once they are placed, try not to look down again.
1. The Left Hand
- Pinky Finger: Rest on A
- Ring Finger: Rest on S
- Middle Finger: Rest on D
- Index Finger: Rest on F (Feel for the small bump!)
2. The Right Hand
- Index Finger: Rest on J (Feel for the small bump!)
- Middle Finger: Rest on K
- Ring Finger: Rest on L
- Pinky Finger: Rest on ; (semicolon)
🎮 Interactive Game: Home Row Word Builder
Ready to practice? In the game below, you will see words generated from the keys you just learned (like "dad," "flash," and "glass").
Goal: Reach a score of 20 without looking at your hands.

3 Tips to Master This Lesson
- Accuracy is King, Speed is Queen: Do not try to be fast yet. If you type fast but make mistakes, you are training your brain to do the wrong thing. Type slowly and rhythmically.
- The "No-Peeking" Rule: It is very tempting to look down when you get stuck on a word like "salad." Don't do it! Use the bumps on F and J to find your way back.
- Use the Correct Fingers: Force your pinky to hit 'A' and your ring finger to hit 'S'. It will feel weak at first, but it gets stronger with every keystroke.
What's Next?
Great job completing Lesson 3! Once you can comfortably type these words, you are ready to start moving your fingers up and down.
